The new season of Dertigers aired beginning of September. What do you think the reason for its success is? Will there be a new season? What will you miss most about your character?
“Dertigers” is about people you can relate to. The situations are of course extremer than in real life, but still recognisable. It’s drama with lots of humour in it. Which makes the viewer understand what the characters are going through and feel connected with them. I’m sure everybody has at least two or more people in their direct environment that behave like one of the characters in the series, a friend, a neighbour, a colleague,… The characters go through some painful stuff sometimes but always with some comic relief which makes the viewer relate, laugh it off and be happy that all that’s not happening to them. My character, Agnes, is definitely a recognisable character. Someone you can picture in your own life. She can be pretty annoying, but luckily she’s one of the characters who balances the drama into the funny side of things. That’s what made it so much fun for me to bring Agnes to life. This is the final season of “Dertigers” and I will miss playing Agnes a lot. Aspecifically because she’s the fun note in the series. That made playing her so interesting : she balances between the humor and drama in every scene. She finds herself in some pretty painful situations but her reactions and intentions always bring a smile to the viewer’s face, said Annick Van Couwenberghe.
You’re also working on a feature film for which you had preliminary meetings with producers at the Venice Film Festival. What is it about?
Yes, it’s the first feature film I’ve written together with my co-scriptwriter Trees Goethals. It’s a feelgood movie with a touch of Christmas. I believe good Christmas-movies are hard to find in our culture. Although there is a big market outthere for it, during the holiday-season a lot of American hallmark-movies are screened, but there are not a lot of European christmas-movies which I think is a shame. I grew up in a family where Christmas always was a big deal. And I remember the warmth of the December month, something I always looked forward to as a child. And I try to bring that warmth into our home every year with decorations and music. I see people all around me enjoying the warm fuzzy feeling of the holiday season and we wanted to melt that into a movie that would fit perfectly into that atmosphere.
Is it true that you’re working on a TV series script?
That is absolutely true ! And again together with Trees. We make a very good script writing team. And I believe that’s because we respect each others ideas. There is a considerable age gap between us and that makes us very compatible because we find ourselves in different stages in our lives with different life experiences that complement each other. On the series itself, we are trying out a completely different genre. We are writing a classy, surrealistic, film noir dramedy series. Something we haven’t done yet, because we love to keep challenging ourselves. Trying out a new genre brings out a new energy and dynamic in our writing which keeps script writing interesting and fulfilling. That’s what life is about, right, keep exploring new things and see where it le****ou.
Let’s talk about your upcoming projects. Will you be on a reality show? What is it about?
Yes, I’ve worked with DPG Media and Production Company Pit on a new concept reality show that will air on September 25th on VTM and VTMgo. It’s called “Het Complot”, translated “The Conspiracy”. I can’t tell you the details yet because that would ruin the surprise-aspect of the show. I can tell you that I worked together with Manu Van Acker on three episodes. Manu hosts the show and conspires behind the scenes to… Well, you’ll just have to watch. It involves conspiring with family and friends, and I come in to “help everyone in the right direction to…”. Haha, like I said : you will just have to watch !
